I gave a speech at a conference last month on this topic. After some thought I came up with both a short answer and a long answer
If pressed to give a one word answer then NO.
The longer answer is Probably Not.
I think that Rica’s piece on new digital natives makes the point.
Computers in the classroom all too often mean Standard Operating Environment PCs with IT professionals (what ever that means) determining what is appropriate. The tipping point has come and no longer are computers something special. Forty years ago there was no need for whole departments to pronounce on whether a pencil should be painted red or yellow; today we really don’t need micro management of ‘computers’ in the classroom either. Whether it is the embedded processor in the microwave, the smartphone, the tablet or the desktop they are just tools and should not attract any special attention.
