welcome to gingerbread town

the most important thing on the civica lld social calendar this month has been the GINGERBREAD HOUSE TEAMS CHALLENGE. The rules were simple: take an IKEA gingerbread house, and in 90 minutes and with $15 dollars build the winning house based on design, taste and structural integrity.

This afternoon teams gathered to build their winning house. It is fair to say that before this, however, many ‘secret’ meetings had taken place behind closed office doors and some team members had dedicated their entire weekends to getting their special toffee/royal icing/snow formulas right on the day.

Like any proper challenge, there can only be one winner. There were two in this case as the judges declared a tie for first place. Team Elysia and Team Jayson both impressed the judges by their attention to detail  –  inventive use of light for Team Jayson (there was a also a fairy floss machine and a blowtorch involved), and fancy tiling work for Team Elysia who paid homage to Spanish architect Gaudi for their inspiration.  First runner up was Team Casey with by far the scariest looking house in Gingerbread Town.

However, as you can see in the pictures below, all the teams deserved to win. It’s quite amazing what one can do with a little imagination.

Feel free to a comment about your favourite entry – there will be a people’s choice award as voted by you.

Happy Christmas all!

Team Jayson

Team Derek - IKEA R US

Team Jimmy - the great Aussie home

Very impressive – and that’s just Andy’s project plan.

Hard to choose just one for my People’s Choice vote, but I’m thinking I’m loving the IKEA of Derek’s team (maybe that’s just because it reminds me of Ghostbusters) and the licorice all-sort out-door setting of Team Jimmy. Also an honourable mention to Team Nigel’s log cabin for bringing back memories of Grizzly Adams, I’ll be singing ‘Maybe’ for the rest of the day now.

Good job everyone – season’s greetings to all

‘Maybe, there’s a world where we don’t have to run,
Maybe, there’s a time we’ll call our own
    Living free in harmony….’
